Transliteration

Translation
By {ʿbd} son of Ygṯ of the lineage of Bs¹ʾ and he and his brother escaped from a party of men going to fight the year the Nabataeans rebelled against the people of {Rome}, so O {Lt} [grant] security

Commentary
Note that the second letter of the text looks as though it was originally carved as a m and then converted to a ʿ.

For
nfrt compare Classical Arabic nafrah "a people hastening to war" (Lane 2825b under nafīr). We would suggest that WH's translation (used here) fits the context better than that suggested in Al-Jallad and Jaworska (in press) "and he and his brother were announced [commander] of a party of near kinsmen". The fight could well have been the Nabataean rebellion.

At the end it seems that the author intended to carve
h lt but accidentally omitted the l. WH copied a ʾ rather than a h, this is because there is a small abrasion near the letter's stem. The detailed photograph shows this along with s¹lm.
